Muntu Dance Theater Chicago

The project was to be located in the south Chicago community of Lawndale, a key component in the revitalization of a residential community currently short on strong cultural institutions.

​Conceived as part of a new arts corridor, Muntu’s site was situated across the street from Little Black Pearl, a youth art center, and close to the Hyde Park Arts Center, a community art exhibition center.

The project presented several unique challenges to the team—

• Reuse of existing concrete footings and steel
• A tight budget and schedule
• A multidisciplinary design-build team was assembled to present cost options and work with Muntu to ensure that their operational needs were addressed.
• A key to the team’s success was the close collaboration between Krueck + Sexton and the theater and lighting consultant.

The new facility included a 400+ seat performing arts theater, a 100 seat black-box theater, and three dance rehearsal studios.
