This campus was developed under the GSA Design Excellence program, which supports and honors all federal employees' dedication to public service. As this twenty-acre site was originally part of the Florida Everglades, the design team also had a secondary goal of restoring as much of these indigenous wetlands as possible.
The project's completion found 1,000 federal employees working comfortably and proudly in an environment in which 59% of the original wetlands had been restored.
Achieving these goals required working directly with this unique setting, both in its abundance and hazards, views, sun, heat, and water. The two 60-foot-wide buildings minimize solar exposure and heat gain, creating micro-climates that allow employees to engage with the outdoors.
Perforated sunscreens reduce glare without obstructing views while the landscaping strategically integrates and conceals security elements, along with a robust storm-water management system that builds in resiliency.
