Originally from Genova, Italy, Gemma's care for architecture grew alongside her as she moved across a host of different cities. Giving thoughtful attention to her surroundings is an essential component of her quotidian that directly informs her design method. She is particularly interested in topics of material use, waste, and re-use, and the process of careful building repair as a means to continue a story of place.
She graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture from the Illinois Institute of Technology, wherein she was awarded accolades including the George Danforth Traveling Scholarship and the AIA medal for academic excellence. During her senior year, she expanded her interest of architectural heritage by crafting a thesis project on the question of "value" as tied to building, place, culture, and object. Particular focus was placed on hand drafting and physical crafting as media in service to the creation of narrative depth.
Outside of the practice, Gemma loves to play the cello, rock-climb, and cook for and with friends/family.
