The Silvio J. Mollo Federal Building has received an Honorable Mention in The Architect’s Newspaper’s Best of Design Awards in the Unbuilt – Cultural & Civic category. The recognition reflects the project’s transformation of a 1975 federal building into a contemporary, performance-driven, low-carbon workplace.
Located within New York City’s Civic Center and home to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, the rehabilitation of the Silvio J. Mollo Federal Building reuses and transforms its existing concrete structure to reduce whole-life carbon while creating a contemporary workplace that prioritizes daylight and user comfort.
New all-electric systems lower operational carbon align with the General Service Administration's renewable electricity purchasing program, while the high-performance façade and entry pavilion reposition the building as a symbol of accessibility and justice. Integrated planning, such as linking interior upgrades with accessibility and security improvements, strengthens the building’s presence and supports the urban landscape of St. Andrew’s Plaza.
A new staff entry pavilion and façade recast the building as a contemporary symbol of justice.
A transformed façade supports decarbonization goals and strengthens the building’s civic presence along Foley Square.
A renewed interior lobby brings daylight, comfort, and clarity to the rehabilitated 1975 workplace.
